Sedibeng, previously known as Vaal Triangle, is situated on the banks of the Vaal River, in the southern and eastern parts of Gauteng. Sedibeng Chess has the second largest CHESSA registrations and is one of the most active chess provinces in South Africa.
Sedibeng Chess hosts the Emerald Sedibeng Open chess tournament annually. This tournament, sponsored by Emerald Casino, Sasol and Sud-Chemie, boasts one of the largest prize moneys in South Africa. The 2009 Emerald Sedibeng Open, took place on 6 & 7 March 2009.
